Procedure for child adoption in Nigeria
Step 1: Choose an Adoption Agency or Lawyer
Select a licensed adoption lawyer specializing in adoption law to guide you through the process.
Select an accredited/licensed child adoption agency.
Step 2: Meet the Eligibility Criteria
Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria set by the Nigerian government, including:
– Be at least 25 years old
– Have a steady income
– Be of good character
– Be at least 21 years older than the child
Step 3: Obtain a Home Study Report
A social worker will conduct a home study to assess your suitability as an adoptive parent. The report will be submitted to the court.
Step 4: Select a Child
Work with the adoption agency or lawyer to select a child that matches your preferences.
Step 5: File an Adoption Petition
Your lawyer will file an adoption petition on your behalf with the relevant court.
Step 6: Court Hearing
Attend a court hearing where the judge will review your petition and home study report.
Step 7: Investigation and Report

Step 8: Adoption Order
If the court is satisfied with the investigation report, an adoption order will be granted.
Step 9: Registration of the Adoption
Register the adoption with the relevant authorities, such as the National Population Commission.
Step 10: Obtain a New Birth Certificate
Obtain a new birth certificate for the child, reflecting your name as the parent.
Step 11: Post-Adoption Reporting
Submit post-adoption reports to the court and the adoption agency, as required.
The entire process can take several months to a few years, depending on the complexity of the case and the efficiency of the court.
