Reporting the Abuse
1. Report to the police: The victim or a third party shall report the abuse to the nearest police station.
2. Obtain a police report: The police will provide a report, which is essential for further legal action.
Seeking Medical Attention
1. Seek medical attention: The victim shall receive medical attention to document injuries.
2. Obtain a medical report: The medical report will serve as evidence.
Filing a Complaint
1. File a complaint: The victim will be encouraged to commence a civil suit for damages in a High Court, depending on the severity of the abuse.
2. Apply for a restraining order: Law Solutions Centre may apply to the court to grant a restraining order to protect the victim from further abuse.
Prosecution
1. Prosecution: Law Solutions Centre will on behalf of the client, interface with the police to ensure proper investigation and when necessary prosecute the offender.
2. Trial: The case will go to trial, where the victim will testify, and evidence will be presented. Law Solutions Centre will provide guidance, advisory and other support services.
Support Services
1. National Human Rights Commission (NHRC): Provides support and guidance for victims of spousal abuse. Law Solutions Centre will co-ordinate this and make presentations on behalf of the client.
2. Women’s Rights Organizations: Law Solutions Centre will connect victims to organizations like the Women’s Aid Collective (WACOL), Nigeria, International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) which offer counseling, shelter, and legal assistance.
3. Counseling Services: Law Solutions Centre will recommend reputable psychologists and marriage counselors for necessary therapy to the victim or sometimes, the couple.
