HOW TO APPLY FOR A MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE IN NIGERIA (YFL 004)

Pre-conditions

Ensure you are married: You must have conducted a valid marriage ceremony under the marriage Act.

Gather required documents: Ensure you have the necessary documents, including:

    – A valid means of identification (e.g., national ID card, driver’s license, or

     international passport)

    – A copy of your marriage license (if applicable)

Application Process

Visit the marriage registry: Go to the Federal Marriage Registry, National Population Commission (NPC), or preferably, to the local government marriage registry where your marriage was conducted.

Obtain an application form: Collect an application form for a marriage certificate from the registry.

Fill the application form: Fill the application form accurately, providing all required information.

Attach required documents: Attach the required documents, including your means of identification, and marriage license (if applicable).

Submit the application: Submit the completed application form and attached documents to the registry.

Pay the application fee: Pay the required application fee.

Wait for processing: Wait for the registry to process your application, which may take 1-3 weeks.

Collection of Marriage Certificate

Return to the registry: Return to the registry with your receipt and identification to collect your marriage certificate.

Verify the certificate: Verify that the marriage certificate is accurate, complete, and signed by the authorized officer.

Important Notes:

Certified true copy: If you need a certified true copy of your marriage certificate, you may need to pay an additional fee.

Authentication: For international purposes, you may need to authenticate your marriage certificate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Nigerian Embassy/High Commission in the relevant country.
